Fixing Leash Reactivity

Why your dog lunges and barks at other dogs on leash — and the systematic approach to change it.

Your dog isn't 'dominant' or 'aggressive.' They're overwhelmed and the leash is preventing their flight response. Fix the fear, fix the reaction.

Threshold distance is the distance at which your dog notices another dog but doesn't react. Stay outside this distance for all training. Every reaction reinforces the behavior — avoid reactions at all costs.

Engage-disengage: dog sees trigger → you mark (click/yes) → treat. Repeat 10-20 times at threshold distance. When the dog starts looking at the trigger and then back to you automatically, you've made progress. Decrease distance gradually.
