Puppy Socialization Window

The critical 8-16 week socialization period — what to expose your puppy to, how, and why it prevents behavior problems later.

A well-socialized puppy at 12 weeks is a confident dog at 2 years. A puppy who saw nothing but your living room is a dog who barks at mailboxes.

What you'll learn

The socialization window closes around 16 weeks. Every positive experience before then builds confidence. Every scary experience avoided or made positive prevents fear. Don't wait until vaccinations are complete — carry your puppy places.

People: expose to men with beards, children, people in hats/sunglasses/uniforms, people using mobility aids. Each should give treats. 10+ new people per week for 4 weeks = 40+ positive associations.

Surfaces: grass, concrete, gravel, tile, hardwood, carpet, grates, elevators, stairs. Let the puppy explore at their own pace. Treat for touching each surface. Never force — that creates the fear you're trying to prevent.
